Shibari is what we Westerners (or gaijin) call a Japanese form of artistic bondage in which the submissive is bound with varying lengths of thin, intricately-woven ropes, tied into visually striking patterns. The word Shibari actually describes artistically-tied packages, and the word Kinbaku refers to the binding of people. Kinbaku literally means "beautiful, tight binding". The rope itself is known as asanawa and is usually made of jute, although linen and hemp rope are sometimes used. It is important that the rope is made from natural materials, so that the bindings will hold together via the friction of turns and twisting, as well as knots. Western application of Shibari often employs synthetic rope to provide a variety of tactile sensations for the sub, but this also forces the artist to use more complex knots.
Kinbaku was established as an art form in the early 20th Century by Seiu Ito (1882-1961), a Japanese painter. The art became quite popular in the 1950s and spawned several magazines devoted to it. It came to America in the 1960s, but did not gain widespread popularity until the 1990s. While the Japanese version of the art form emphasizes spiritual aspects, Western Shibari is mostly a physical phenomenon and in true American style, isn't bound (no pun intended) by strict technical rules or protocol. This shouldn't be construed as implied inferiority; it is simply a different cultural perspective. In the hands of a capable artist, Shibari can be breathtaking to behold.
Shibari continues to gain popularity in the West, with demonstrations and exhibitions being common at fetish shows and erotic art shows. Fusions of various styles are popping up all the time and of late, erotic photographers have caught on and produced a plethora of beautiful works. We can be certain that Shibari will be around for a long time to come and continue to grow and evolve, as all great art should.
